The Raid 2: Berandal
De in Wales geboren en getogen Gareth Evans had in een paar jaar geleden een idee voor een groots opgezet actiespektakel. Maar als beginnend regisseur kreeg hij het geld voor een dergelijk project niet van de grond. Met beperkte middelen maakte hij toen in Jakarta het Indonesisch gesproken Serbuan Maut (internationaal getiteld The Raid: Redemption). Door het grote internationale succes van die martial arts film, had hij plots meer geld ter beschikking. Zijn oorspronkelijke film-idee bouwde hij om tot het vervolg van zijn succesfilm en met een budget dat vier keer hoger ligt dan dat van deel 1, maakte hij The Raid: Berandal. Een nog groter spektakel dan de eerste film!
Het verhaal begint ongeveer twee uur na het eind van de eerste film. Rama (Iko Uwais) zit nog na te hijgen van het knokken in het appartementencomplex, als hij te horen krijgt dat de ellende eigenlijk pas net begonnen is. Om te kunnen garanderen dat zijn familie veilig blijft zal hij kort gezegd de gehele onderwereld in de stad moeten uitschakelen. De enige manier hiertoe lijkt als infiltrant binnen te dringen in de machtigste gangsterfamilie. Het idee is om in de gevangenis het vertrouwen te winnen van de zoon van de grote ‘godfather’ en op die manier steeds dieper binnen te dringen en vervolgens de organisatie van binnenuit tot de grond te brengen.
In feite is het idee dus het hetzelfde als bij het eerste deel van The Raid. Rama probeert zich de hele film lang eerst naar binnen te vechten om vervolgens van binnenuit zich weer een weg naar buiten te vechten. Dit keer is het geen appartementencomplex, maar een criminele familie.
Eigenlijk doet het verhaal er ook niet zo toe. Met enige regelmaat wordt de plot ook te complex en nog veel vaker ontstijgt het geenszins de platgereden paden van de infiltrantentriller. Terwijl het verhaal maar één doel dient en dat is het aan elkaar rijgen van fantastische actiescènes. De actiescenes zijn hard, bloederig en lang: The Raid 2 kent een aantal unieke scenes die je niet snel zult vergeten.
Als misdaadthriller stelt The Raid 2 niet zoveel voor. Hij is te lang, te ingewikkeld en dramatisch totaal niet overtuigend. De actie maakt dit alles echter ruimschoots goed, want daarop beoordeeld is The Raid 2: Berandal in zijn genre één van de leukste films van het jaar.
